TWO: The Helper

1      2      3

4      5      6

7      8      9

Basic Goal: To meet the needs of others.

The Type Two is primarily motivated by the desire to meet the needs of others. Twos take special pride in being needed by the team, the one who does the "heavy lifting", for the boss, or who helped make someone else successful. The benefit that comes along with these helping roles, in and outside of the workplace, is a special place of importance to the team or to someone of status in the organization. The Two loves feeling appreciated and instrumental to the success of the organization. The ideal Two role can be found in just about any field, because there is almost always an opportunity to help another individual or group at work whether it is a lab at a biotech firm or an accounting department for a non-profit opera house. A stereotypical job for a Two might be a Human Resources Director where he can focus on people or a Chief of Staff where she can help make the boss look good.

What people usually notice about a Two, whether the Two is a man or a woman, is heart. Twos usually speak with heartfelt warmth and show sincere care for those around them. They also tend to go out of their way for people and they don't stop giving. They go "above and beyond" what is required in order to take care of other people's needs. They readily will "go the extra mile"; if it can help someone else out. Twos often seem selfless and they usually hate to ask for anything in return. They give because they love to do it; it is what they do.

Twos have strong people skills. They will especially excel in settings where they will be appreciated for their contributions to the other people on the team. They will also excel in situations where they are the indispensable individual behind a powerful person.

Under stress, the Two will act much like an Eight. When relaxed the Two can act like a Four. While the skills of the Eight can help the Two excel in certain areas, developing the characteristics of the Four can be extremely beneficial to the Two's career success and overall well-being.
