TYPE FOUR: The Artist

Motivated to express individuality.

The Artist yearns to express individuality and authenticity. While not all Fours are artistic in the traditional sense, they feel driven to express a unique voice through their work. This could include crafting a product of some sort or creating an appealing atmosphere. Examples of roles for Fours in the corporate world are the Creative Director, who sets a distinctive look and feel for the company's brand standards, or a Change Management Consultant, who offers unique insights to help companies deal with the human issues of mergers, acquisitions, and layoffs. Other roles in which Fours can express individuality are as a copywriter, graphic designer, retail space designer, actor, producer, singer-songwriter, painter, chef, pastor, and therapist.

To others, Fours usually appear deep, reflective, and sensitive. They have a rich interior life of thoughts and feelings which they can translate into wisdom to share with those around them. Most Fours need time alone to concentrate; they need creative time to tap into their well of insight and original thought. Fours can appear moody because they don't feel the need to keep things up and happy all the time. They are interested in equally exploring the dark sides as well as the bright sides of a situation. They can have a certain melancholy about the current state of affairs and a lofty vision of how things can be made better, richer, more elegant, or more meaningful. The Four's imagination of what "could be" can serve as a tremendous resource of creativity for an organization.

Fours especially excel in roles where a unique touch is required for creating an appealing work atmosphere, brand image, written collateral, conference program, and so on. If a Four has not yet discovered her own unique voice, it is advisable to keep exploring different mediums until she hits upon this hidden talent.

Under stress, the Four will act much like a Two. When relaxed the Four can act like a One. While the skills of the Two can help the Four excel in certain areas, developing the characteristics of the One can be extremely beneficial to the Four's career success and overall well-being.
